How to Gets Keys in Ancient Egypt, Pirate Seas, and The Wild West
Keys are very important in Plants vs Zombies 2 because they are used to unlock new levels and plants. They are necessary to open gates that will enventually unlock upgraded plants, boosts, and various other PvZ2 goodies.
Unfortunately though, keys appear at random as rewards for completing stages and therefore, they can be somewhat difficult to accumulate.
With enough keys (made easier with the right key farming strategies) all PvZ2 levels can be unlocked without spending actual money.
Of course, you do have the option of unlocking levels without keys by making in-app purchases. In our opinion though, buying access to levels is not necessary and if you want to spend real money it would be better to buy something like a Snow Pea or Squash.
Note that keys picked up on one level (e.g., The Pirate Seas) will not carry over to another (The Wild West). As a result, you will probably have more than enough keys for Ancient Egypt (1st world), just enough for Pirate Seas (2nd world), and may need to farm for keys by the time you get to The Wild West (3rd world).

PvZ2 Key Farming Strategy #1 - Don't skip levels or stars
Simply by working your way through all of the levels and star challenges you will likely get most of the keys you need to progress in the game. Working through the game level by level and not skipping any stages we never ran into a situation in which we were "stuck" with no new levels or star challenges. Well, at least until we reached The Wild West. In the Wild West we finally needed to key farm in levels we already completed so that we could move on.
PvZ2 Key Farming Strategy #2 - Always go after the Yeti Zombie when he appears
Unlike the first Plants vs Zombies, in Plants vs Zombies 2 the Yeti Zombie actually has a purpose. If you are able to kill him when he appears in a level, he will drop his lunchbox containing a reward for you (kind of sad really - we almost feel bad taking it from him). Rewards will include coins, diamonds, and most importantly, keys.
PvZ2 Key Farming Strategy #3 - Gather keys in the final stage of each world
Although keys in Plants vs Zombies 2 are said to drop at random during levels (always after a zombie kill), we have noticed that you tend to get more keys on the final stage of each world - typically a level in which the plants are delivered to you automatically. These levels usually contain most of the zombies encountered in the world and have a higher proportion of tougher zombies (Buckethead Zombies, Pharaoh Zombies, Pianist Zombies, etc.). Keys appear to drop more often after killing the more difficult zombies.
PvZ2 Key Farming Strategy #4 - Force the Yeti Zombie to appear
Key farming strategy #3 and the level-specific strategies below worked well when Plants vs Zombies 2 was first released. However, it appears as though a game update has made key drops on these levels less common (an obvious nudge encouraging you to buy access to new levels rather than use the free keys). Therefore, getting keys from the Yeti Zombie now appears to be the best key farming strategy. The problem is that you can't fight him whenever you want...or can you?
Making the Yeti Zombie appear is a bit of a pain, but if you need keys this is the fastest way to get them. This is how you do it:
1) If the Yeti Zombie is not on your map, force quit Plants vs Zombies 2 (double tap the Home button on your iPhone, iPad, etc. and close the game).
2) Go to Settings on your device and change the date to at least two days in the future.
3) Reopen Plants vs Zombies 2 and the Yeti should appear somewhere on your map.
4) You can't control where he appears or what he will drop (diamonds or keys), but you will need to defeat him to have a chance at getting a key. For example, sometimes he will appear on Ancient Egypt when you really need keys in The Wild West. Sometimes he will drop a diamond instead of a key. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do about this but it is still probably the best key farming strategy.
5) Repeat this process until you have enough keys to move on in the game.

PvZ2 Keyfarming in Ancient Egypt
If you are going to farm for keys in Ancient Egypt and do not want to use the Yeti-
In the Pirate Seas, your best bet for picking up a few keys is again with a Last Stand level -
In the Wild West, keyfarming is most effective on, you guessed it, a Last Stand level. To get more keys in the Wild West (which is probably the stage in which you will run out of keys), choose Last Stand III. Of the three Last Stand levels in The Wild West, this one requires the least amount of effort on your part (not that we are calling you lazy). You can beat this level on autopilot by placing a row of Melon-
